Puppets are everywhere! The Broadway productions of Lion King and Warhorse, films such as the remade Muppet Movie series, as well as Las Vegas performers like America’s Got Talent winner, Terry Fator, have generated a renewed interest in the performing art of puppetry.
Through short video clips, students will study the work of some of the most famous puppeteers and the use of sophisticated puppets in contemporary shows. Students will learn puppetry techniques such as proper manipulation of puppets, exits and entrances, puppet posture, eye contact, creating characters, making puppets come alive and more. A variety of styles of puppets will be provided for practice and performances and students will learn technique and the various types of puppets that are utilized in theater today.
Course Objectives:
- Demonstrate an understanding of and appreciation for puppetry as a form of dramatic art.
- Demonstrate a knowledge of basic techniques of manipulating puppet mouths, rod arms, and human arms.
- Maintain proper posture and eye contact.
- Execute proper entrances and exits.
- Perform puppet show and or musical number, using live voices and/or pre-recorded material.
